A. Martini & Co. began construction on the new Senior Living Facility – Atria at McCandless – working with CA Ventures, out of Chicago. This 175,000sf four-story building will house 179 units with independent living/assisted living and memory care rooms, as well as many amenities. Atria at McCandless, a $34M project, is on track to be completed in Q2 of 2019.

One Oxford unveiled its latest space on Tuesday, February 27 – Oxford Market. A. Martini & Co. served as the General Contractor for the construction of this 6,000sf space. This new “food hall” space is located on the first floor of the building and features five food stations, a number of which will rotate, allowing for local chefs. In addition to the food, full salad bar, and grab-and-go items, Bar Oxford also joins the new space.
“In addition to eschewing cash for most food transactions, this food hall diverges from others in the area in that it’s a hybrid branded space from Eurest — the $1.4 billion food and vending division of Compass Group North America — with an eye on community businesses, that will also include at least one local chef spot,” says Jim Kallas, Eurest Division president based in Chicago.

A. Martini & Co. was honored at The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) Construction Industry Evening of Excellence on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at the Heinz Field East Club. A. Martini & Co.’s project, City Works Eatery & Pour House, was selected as the best ‘New Construction Under $10M’ project. The architect was Dacre & Youngquist, LLC, out of Chicago, IL.
Partnering with Bottleneck Management, Bramco Construction, and Highwoods Properties, A. Martini & Co. applied our vast experience working within PPG Place and our expertise at constructing restaurants within the Pittsburgh market to approach this 11,000sf Eatery & Pourhouse inside the famous and iconic building. A. Martini & Co.’s team delivered the project by the date that Bottleneck Management selected at the start of the project, allowing their City Works Pittsburgh location to be the highest grossing location for an opening weekend and first month of business.
“This project presented some challenges, space constraints and noise concerns, due to the open atrium and tenants within PPG Place,” said Angelo Martini, Jr., Chief Operating Officer at A. Martini & Co. “Our team has a good relationship with Highwoods Properties and has completed a number of projects within PPG. Communication was key to address the project’s challenges, as well as maintain Bottleneck Management’s vision for their Pittsburgh location and we were confident that we could deliver. We are very proud of the partnership that developed and the synergy between our team and theirs.”
During the Awards Ceremony, the project was described by one of the MBA Awards judges by saying, “This project exemplifies how teamwork and strong project management techniques can overcome numerous challenges and major scope changes.”
It is no secret that in recent years the construction industry has undergone some dramatic changes. Since embracing construction time tracking and other construction software, construction sector employers and employees have embraced technology as a way of enhancing their skills and services. This announcement comes on the cusp of the fourth generation of the Martini family joining the team. Mollie Martini, Anthony Martini’s daughter, began her role as Estimating Coordinator and Assistant Project Manager, this fall and is elated to be working alongside her grandfather, uncle and father.

The family tradition continues as A. Martini & Co. welcomes Mollie Martini to the team. With Mollie’s tenure beginning, A. Martini & Co. now becomes a fourth-generation General Contracting and Construction Management firm, who is celebrating 67 years in business in Western Pennsylvania. This next step in the legacy of the Verona based General Contracting and Construction Management Company is one that many family-run businesses don’t often reach. Nationally, only 3 percent of family businesses make it to the fourth generation. Mollie, who is Anthony Martini’s daughter, will be working alongside the Estimating and Project Management teams. Soliciting and procuring pricing for all projects and also working on-site during construction as an Assistant Project Manager.

Angelo Martini, Jr. believes that Mollie’s intelligence, drive, and passion will be great assets to the organization as A. Martini & Co. moves forward and continues to grow. “I am happy that Mollie decided to move back from Chicago to join in the family business and am proud to be working alongside my niece.” Angelo, Jr., COO, said. “Our team is one that truly cares about our customers, about each other, about the company and about the community. Mollie is a graduate of Miami University and has experience in the Chicago market working with Financial Services and Brokerage clients.
Mollie says that she had a moment over the past year where she felt that she was ready: “From the beginning, my great-grandfather had a passion for building relationships with the people he worked for. I have grown up watching my family work in the construction industry and knew I would be a part of it someday. It is an honor to now work alongside my grandfather, uncle, and my dad to continue to expand A. Martini & Co.’s project portfolio. For the short time I have been here, I can see how their passion and expertise has formed some incredible relationships with owners and operators in Pittsburgh. I am really looking forward to being a part of this legacy.”
The Josh Gibson Foundation broke ground on September 27 on their anticipated Heritage Park which will be a hands-on interactive exhibit that pays tribute to history and culture of Negro League baseball in Pittsburgh.
The park will be located at Station Square on land donated by Forest City Commercial Group and will be free and open to the public. FedEx Ground donated $500,000 as part of their sponsorship, as the name and title donor for the construction of the Josh Gibson Heritage Park. A. Martini & Co. will serve as the general contractor and oversee the construction of the park.
Josh Gibson, who played in the Negro Leagues from 1930-46 (the last three of which he played with a brain tumor) died of a stroke at the age of 35 in 1947, three months before Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier, but as a testament to his greatness and undeniable talent, was still enshrined in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Jackie would be more than pleased to know he opened up the baseball world to all people disregarding their race, with baseball fans around the world enjoying the opportunity of adding key players to their fantasy teams in different fantasy baseball leagues.
Josh Gibson Heritage Park will provide educational and cultural context to the Negro League’s significant presence in the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh region in particular featured two of the most successful teams in the League’s history, the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. The Park will feature historical information about the Grays and Crawfords. Individual monuments, designed by noted sports artist, Dino Guarino, will feature tributes to League icons including Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, Cumberland Posey, Judy Johnson and Vic Harris.

On Monday, September 25, 2017, Excela Health unveiled another phase of the healthcare system’s multi-million dollar renovation to transform this facility into Excela Square at Frick-a hybrid medical mall that will include emergency services, inpatient care and outpatient services.

A. Martini & Co. served as the General Contractor for the multi-phased renovation of the various departments on the first and third floors of Frick Hospital.
The areas that were updated, on the first floor, include the hospital’s main entrance and lobby with new floor to near-ceiling windows that house the doorways that were designed by a company that offer similar services to this door installation company for example. The lobby flows into Outpatient Check-In, Outpatient Surgery, and the Hospital Cafe. Additional departments that were completely updated on the first floor were MRI, Xray, Ultrasound, Women’s Center, Blood Draw and CT Scan. Many new items of equipment have been brought in for this purpose, from providers similar to Butterfly Network and other makers of high-end medical items.
On the third floor, our team performed a complete makeover of the Cardiology Department, which entailed relocating the Cardiology team to a temporary area on the first floor while full demolition and fit-out was completed.
Thorough coordination was illustrated with the phases that involved the highly critical areas: MRI, Xray and CT Suites. Our team worked through critical shut-downs, coordinating directly with each department to keep on the aggressive timeline to deliver the space to Frick Hospital’s Facility Department so their coordination was seamless with the new Siemen’s equipment being installed in the facility. The CT Suite proved to be a bit of a different approach, as our team was able to coordinate activities, as well as open spaces so that Frick Hospital could offer a mobile CT unit on the first floor while the actual department was renovated.
Coordination throughout all phases went incredibly well and allowed Frick Hospital to maintain all of their Imaging capabilities and general Patient Care through construction.

Jeff Burd, publisher of BreakingGround magazine, expects a four-year boom period for health care construction in the region, and dedicated the March-April issue of the publication of the Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania to health care.
“Rarely have there been so many major projects in the pipeline by virtually every hospital system in virtually all the markets they serve,” Burd wrote.
