Project Award

A. Martini & Co. Tapped to Build City Works Restaurant at PPG Place

A. Martini & Co. has been awarded a contract to build City Works, located at 2 PPG, adjacent to Poros, for Bottleneck Management Restaurant Group. City Works, a 300-seat restaurant, slated to open in early 2017, will feature an “extremely robust beverage program with Pennsylvania brands representing 20-25% of the menu.” The restaurant will occupy 10,500sf of space in the lobby of 2 PPG Place, as well as an outdoor patio. The architect on this project is Dacre & Younguist.

A. Martini & Co. to Assist Chef Derek Stevens on Latest Recipe for Pittsburgh

A. Martini & Co. was selected by Chef Derek Stevens for the construction of his latest project for downtown Pittsburgh – Union Standard. Mr. Stevens, who has been executive chef at Eleven for 10 years, said he has been looking for a spot Downtown to open a restaurant for the past year. When he came across the Union Trust space, it was “too perfect” to pass up. “It’s a fantastic property. I’m amazed how many people are talking about that building, how cool it is. I couldn’t be happier to be part of it,” Mr. Stevens said.

With approximately 170 seats in more than 7,000sf of space, Union Standard will occupy the ground floor and mezzanine at William Penn Place and Oliver Avenue. The restaurant will offer a somewhat casual atmosphere with a blend of classic and contemporary American cuisine. The kitchen will have a wood-fired grill and rotisserie. The ground floor will house a large bar along with a well-stocked raw bar and the mezzanine level will offer a quieter dining area and private dining spaces. The restaurant is slated for opening in early 2017.

A. Martini & Co. is Partnering with Red Restaurant Group

Red, The Steakhouse, selected A. Martini & Co. as their general contractor for their 9,200sf space at street level in U.S. Steel Tower on Grant Street, downtown Pittsburgh. The new Pittsburgh restaurant, the latest phase of a major expansion of the Red, The Steakhouse brand, features an expansive outdoor patio area and will be the only white tablecloth restaurant in the 2.5M square foot office building. The designer is Fukui Architects and the project is slated to begin in early September.

Although renderings of designs for Red The Steakhouse Pittsburgh are still in the works, operators project decor and design comparable to that of the restaurant’s other locations in Northeast Ohio and Miami Beach, Florida.

Excela Square at Latrobe Groundbreaking Ceremony

Excela Health broke ground yesterday afternoon on its newest patient-centered medical home, Excela Square at Latrobe. A. Martini & Co. will serve as the General Contractor for this $40 million, 115,000sf complex located off Route 30 in Unity Township. The new facility will be a three-story state-of-the-art ambulatory care center. Following in the footsteps of their highly successful facility in Norwin, Excela Square, and this location will offer patients access to primary and specialty care, diagnostic testing and rehabilitation services, all under one roof. The facility will also house Excela Health’s nationally recognized Family Medicine Residency Program led by Latrobe Hospital.

“The new facility is a culmination of a comprehensive strategic plan completed by Excela Health which examined our hospitals, patient procedures and outcomes, and trends in health care to determine current and future needs,” said Robert Rogalski, Excela Health’s Chief Executive Officer.

Over the last several years, there has been a growing movement within the health care industry to cluster essential services within outpatient settings to better integrate patient needs, prevent avoidable outcomes, and thereby manage service costs more effectively. The patient-centered medical home is a recognized and recommended national model of primary care that improves care and the patient experience while reducing costs. “We’re creating a high-quality care delivery model that works now and in the future,” said Rogalski.

Martini & Co. has a long-standing relationship with Excela Health,” said Angelo Martini, Sr., CEO. “We are honored to have been selected by Excela Health to construct their latest, state-of-the-art facility. A. Martini & Co.: ‘You are only as good as your last job’

When Antonio Martini was working as a concrete subcontractor in the 1950s, he was lined up to do a project in Squirrel Hill. But when the general contractor on the project went bankrupt, Antonio wasn’t paid. So, he decided it might be best to become a general contractor himself, and A. Martini & Co. was born in 1951.

Or at least that’s the urban legend, according to Antonio’s grandson Anthony Martini, who now runs the business with his brother Angelo Jr. and father Angelo Sr.

Three generations have helped run the company, which started out doing retail strip centers and later evolved into work for the Kroger grocery store chain.

But after Kroger left the region in the early ’80s, management decided it was time to switch gears.

Today, the company does a wide range of work for several notable clients, including Google, Indiana Regional Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.

“It’s a very eclectic portfolio of work,” Anthony Martini said.

How the small family-owned business gets all this work is “pretty easy,” he added.

“In the construction industry, you are only as good as your last job,” he said. “By trying to do the right thing, do it well, satisfy your clients, it doesn’t take long for word to get out.”

As for who will take over the business in the future, Anthony said both he and his brother each have three children ranging from high school age to 26.

“Between the six of them, there will likely be [a successor], but they are a little young to start planning out who will take over the business,” Anthony said. “We’re starting to prep them, but we’ll see who is interested in doing it.”

A. Martini & Co. to Build Autodesk’s New Office Space in Bakery Square 2

Autodesk, along with their Owners Representative, Jones Lang LaSalle, selected A. Martini & Co.’s team to build their 13,772sf office space in Bakery Square. The project is targeting LEED Gold CI with LEED Administration and Enhanced Commissioning by A. Martini, NEXT Architecture and CJL Engineering. While keeping the LEED Gold certification requirements at the forefront of the project, A. Martini will build two managers offices, five conference rooms, a training room, copy and print areas, kitchen/break room, a wellness center, reception area, as well as an open floor plan with work stations to utilize natural lighting in the space.

They are relocating their office from RIDC Park in O’Hara Township to the new Bakery Square 2 building in East Liberty. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and be completed at the end of Q1 2016.
